About Damai Labs

Built Around the Idea That Learning Should Feel Settled

A small AI development school in George Town, Penang. We started because we noticed that most courses move too quickly for the material to stick.

Our Story

How Damai Labs Came to Be

Damai Labs grew out of a small study group in Penang in early 2022. A few software developers and researchers found themselves returning to the same question: why did so many AI courses feel like a race? Content stacked on content, week after week, with barely enough time to let each concept settle before the next arrived.

The name "Damai" comes from the Malay word for peaceful or serene. That idea became the operating principle. We built courses that leave space between the ideas — time to practise, to ask, to revisit. The weekly clinic in the AI Starter Course, the small cohort sizes across all tracks, the recordings that stay available — each of these choices came from the same starting point.

We are based at Jalan Burma in George Town, though our courses run online. Our learners come from across Malaysia and occasionally from neighbouring countries. Most are working professionals who want to add real AI skills to their practice without feeling overwhelmed.

What Shapes Our Work

Calm Over Speed

Technical knowledge takes time to become usable. We design each track so the pace allows understanding, not just exposure.

Close Support

Small cohorts mean instructors can see where individual learners are, not just where the group average is.

Practical Over Theoretical

Every track includes real projects. The goal is work you can show and skills you can use, not just concepts you have heard about.

Locally Grounded

We are a Malaysian school and we think about the context our learners are working in — the industries, the language, the career paths available here.

The People

Who You Will Learn With

AH

Ahmad Hafiz

Lead Instructor · Machine Learning

A former research engineer at a KL-based data company, Ahmad now teaches the ML Track and Deep Learning Sanctuary. He is known for explanations that take their time.

SW

Siti Wani

Instructor · Python & Data Foundations

Siti leads the AI Starter Course and developed the weekly clinic format. She has a particular interest in helping learners from non-technical backgrounds find their footing.

RK

Rajan Kumar

Curriculum Designer & Mentor

Rajan shapes how the three tracks fit together and oversees project feedback. He previously worked in enterprise software development and retrained in AI in 2019.

Our Standards

How We Maintain Quality

Reviewed Curriculum

Each track is reviewed before every new cohort opens. Tools and libraries are checked against current industry practice, and session materials are updated accordingly.

Data Privacy

Learner data is held securely and used only for running the courses. We follow Malaysian PDPA guidelines and do not share personal information with third parties for commercial purposes.

Structured Feedback

Every project submission receives written feedback from the assigned instructor. We keep a record of comments so learners can see how their work develops across the track.

Cohort Size Control

Enrolment in each cohort is capped to keep instructor-to-learner ratios manageable. When a cohort is full, we open a waiting list for the next intake.

Clear Learning Outcomes

Each track has a written description of what learners will be able to do at the end. This is shared before enrolment so expectations are clear from the start.

Post-Cohort Review

After each cohort we review what worked and what did not, using learner feedback and instructor notes. Changes are made before the next intake opens.

AI Development Education in Malaysia

Damai Labs operates from George Town, Penang, serving learners from across Malaysia who want to develop working skills in artificial intelligence and machine learning. The school focuses on three connected tracks: an introductory course covering Python and foundational concepts, an intermediate track in machine learning with applied projects, and an advanced pathway through deep learning and neural network deployment.

The Malaysian technology sector has grown steadily over the past decade, and demand for practitioners with real AI skills has grown alongside it. At the same time, many self-taught learners find that online resources, while extensive, can be difficult to navigate without a structured path and someone to ask when something is unclear. Damai Labs exists in the space between those two realities — providing a structured, instructor-supported path through material that might otherwise feel scattered.

All courses are conducted in English, which serves a dual purpose: it develops the learner's technical English alongside the subject matter, and it ensures that course materials align with the international research literature that underpins the field. Sessions are held online, making the courses accessible to learners across Peninsular Malaysia and beyond without requiring travel to Penang.

The school places particular emphasis on project-based learning. Rather than assessments that test recall, Damai Labs asks learners to build things — small models, working pipelines, and in the final track, a capstone that demonstrates end-to-end capability. Feedback on these projects is written and specific, which is more useful for development than a score alone.
